Mecca [ 3 ] ( / mɛkə / ; Arabic : مكة , Makkah , pronounced [ mækkæ ] ) , also transliterated as Mecca is a city in the Hijaz [ 4 ] and the capital of the province of Mecca in Saudi Arabia . The city is located 70 km ( 43 miles ) inland from Jeddah in a narrow valley at a height of 277 meters (909 feet ) above sea level . The population in 2012 was about 2 million , although visitors to triple this number every year during the Hajj period held in the twelfth Islamic lunar month of Dhu al over - Hijjah .
